The Government of Dubai has handed around AED 7.3 billion or close to USD 2 billion to Emirates since March after the information was seen on a bond prospectus by Reuters.
Dubai Airports Passenger Movements
The above chart shows the Passenger movements in 2019 and 2020 as well as compare the change in percentage of passenger movements for each month in both years at Dubai Airports. Accordingly, the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic can be seen from March onwards as the decline YoY was -53.83% mainly due to the UAE government directives to stop the spread of the virus which also resulted in Emirates suspending all passenger flights from 25 March 2020.
The suspension of passenger flights to the UAE was reflected in the fall in passenger movements by over 90% from April to June compared with the same period last year. However, passenger movements increased from 103,489 in June to 528,940 in July as Dubai eased restrictions to allow tourists to visit the city from the 7 July 2020 onwards.
The opening and easing of border restrictions should further improve passenger movements, but unlikely to match the numbers recorded in the previous year as people are still cautious on-air travel and we may not see 2019 figures till a vaccine is developed.
The data includes passenger movements at Dubai International airport which is Emirates hub. The airline is the biggest operator out of the airport, as a result the chart also paints a picture on the number of passengers Emirates carried. The airline has been adding cities back onto their network, but the current 79 cities they serve is nearly half of their pre-pandemic list of 157 cities they used to serve.
Emirates Fleet Composition (as at 19 Jan 2020)
Emirates has also recommenced their partnership with flydubai to offer passengers a network of 100 destinations to choose from between the two carriers. Emirates passengers would once again be able to travel on codeshare flights on over 30 destinations on flydubai and customers of flydubai will have access to over 70 destinations on Emirates network.
